Morgan Stanley & Co.
McGraw-Hill Building
1221 Avenue of the Americas
New York, NY
Trading Facility Relocation
65,000 Square Feet

Morgan Stanley & Co., Incorporated sought electrical and mechanical systems that could meet the requirements of its new trading floor in the McGraw-Hill Building. Securing adequate air conditioning, power and power distribution was of paramount importance. Because of its established expertise in these areas, Robert Derector Associates was engaged to design the project.

In the preliminary stage, RDA produced the schematic drawings and documentation which Morgan Stanley used to demonstrate its need of enhanced building services. Through negotiations where these documents were presented, the landlord, Rockefeller Center, Inc., agreed to install a new, 1,000-ton chilled water system that would meet Morgan Stanley’s immediate and future air-conditioning needs. The landlord benefited by obtaining additional chilled water capacity to market to other tenants.

The challenges to ensuring adequate power and power distribution required a range of specialties. Existing equipment was surveyed. Meetings between hardware users and manufacturers were facilitated. Cable routing plans were formulated. In the end, fifteen separate operational systems were designed to be supported by 500 miles of cabling. Morgan Stanley realized further benefit when Derector’s extensive cabling documentation helped contain the costs of the electrical installation.

Robert Derector Associates has designed approximately 600,000 square feet of trading and other high-tech facilities for Morgan Stanley in the U.S. and abroad.
