Project Specifics
- Tier 3+, 15,000 sf Data Center at 75 watts/sf day one and expandable to 120 watts/sf.
- Emergency generator power and UPS (2N redundancy) support the critical load.
- Air conditioning is provided by many 25-ton air-cooled split systems via 30” raised floor.
- An energy study was performed to compare air-cooled split systems with air-cooled dry-coolers feeding glycol-cooled AC units with economizer coils. Interestingly, the year round energy consumption for both systems is about the same because of the following reasons:
- Air-cooled condenser seeing 95ºF air is more energy efficient than glycol-cooled condenser seeing 110ºF glycol.
- Evaporator fan for split system consumes less energy than evaporator fan for glycol-cooled unit with economizer coil (less pressure coil)
- The economizer coil fed from the dry cooler is only effective when outdoor dry bulb temperature drops below 45ºF (evaporative cooling is not available due to insufficient and unreliable make-up water).
